Whether to finish off your furniture with laminates or veneers is a dilemma faced by most of us. To the common eye, the two may look similar and this choice can more often than not be mind boggling. We’ve written this article so that you do not have to face this issue in the future. So to start with, let's talk about the difference between veneers and laminates.

The Basics

Laminate-This might come as a surprise to most of you but laminates are not made of wood.A laminate is a man made product made to look like it has wood grain.

Veneers-On the other hand, Veneers are made of strips of wood. On the surface, veneers look like solid wood, but at a much lesser cost. Go for veneers if you want that classy, vintage look for your furniture

Why do you need to know the difference?

Laminates and veneers can both give you similar finish and looks, but there are still several differences between the two.

  • Difference in Cost-Laminates are cheaper. Veneers while not as expensive as solid wood, would still come at a higher price. Plus the labour costs associated with veneer polish is extra. Veneers have to be compulsorily polished which increases the overall costs of furniture finished with veneers.
  • Veneers need much more maintenance as compared to laminates-Laminates can be scratch resistant but veneers require polishing from time to time. The good part? If your veneer gets scratched, you can always polish it or re-finish them. The same is not true for laminates. In case of any damage to your laminates, you may have to replace the entire sheet.
  • Time quotient- Veneers have to be necessarily polished. This process takes anywhere between 4-10 days, depending upon the area of the furniture and layout. This could further add to the timeline of your furniture completion.

Where can you use them

-Kitchen Shutters

-Wardrobe Shutters

-Tables

So which one should you choose? - This would be a matter of choice, and would depend upon your personal wants, your budget and your desire to redecorate.
